Bambini’s Cafe & Restaurant – Crafting a Sun-Drenched Brand Identity

Developing an Organic Lifestyle Brand
The Solution
I designed a balanced illustrative badge that integrates a surfboard, a steaming coffee cup, a palm tree, and a rolling ocean wave into a single circular composition. I chose a warm, earthy color palette of “Beach Sand Gold” and “Deep Roasted Brown” to evoke the natural materials found at the coast. This organic approach was carried through to the typography, using a rugged, sans-serif font that feels approachable yet professional, perfectly suited for the relaxed environments of Hikkaduwa and Arugambay.
Key Features
The identity system is centered on an integrated illustrative logo that acts as a visual shorthand for the entire cafe experience, encompassing coffee, surf, and sun. This versatile design was applied across a range of tactile brand collateral, including custom wooden signage, branded surfboards, and eco-friendly coffee cups, to ensure a seamless and consistent guest experience. Additionally, I created a minimalist apparel line featuring large-scale back prints that reinforce the brand as a distinct lifestyle choice. The entire campaign is tied together by the strategic tagline, “The Only Shots You Need,” a witty messaging choice that cleverly bridges the gap between the precision of specialty coffee and the adrenaline of the surf.
Project Overview
Bambini’s Cafe & Restaurant, located in the iconic surf hubs of Hikkaduwa and Arugambay, required a visual identity that resonated with the lifestyle of beachgoers and coffee lovers. The goal was to create a “vacation-state-of-mind” brand that feels both rustic and premium. I developed a comprehensive identity system including a hand-drawn illustrative logo and a suite of lifestyle collateral that positions the cafe as the ultimate destination for “the only shots you need”—espresso and surf.
Design Challenge
The primary challenge was to capture three distinct elements—surf culture, premium coffee, and a tropical atmosphere—within a single, cohesive mark that wouldn’t feel cluttered. The branding needed to be versatile enough to work on various textures, from rough-hewn wooden signage and surfboards to delicate coffee cups and high-quality apparel, all while maintaining its organic, “hand-crafted” feel.
