To overcome these challenges, I utilized a heightmap-based terrain system paired with custom rock and foliage assets to create a natural, eroded look for the mountains. I implemented a modular workflow for the cottages, allowing for quick iteration of building layouts while maintaining a consistent architectural style. For the lighting, I used a combination of global illumination for the overcast daytime scenes and high-contrast point lights for the night-time “glow” effect in the windows, guiding the player’s eye toward safe zones.

Environmental storytelling is deeply integrated into the terrain through weathered watchtowers and ancient ruins that hint at a forgotten history. Every element is refined through player-centric level design, where terrain paths and visual focal points are optimized for smooth third-person navigation and camera control. Finally, the environment maintains high visual fidelity without compromising performance by utilizing Levels of Detail (LODs) and highly optimized texture sets for seamless gameplay.
Project Overview
Highland Sanctuary is a realistic 3D game environment designed for a third-person action-adventure or RPG title. Set within a jagged, mountainous region, the project showcases the juxtaposition between the harsh, unforgiving wilderness and the flickering warmth of human settlement. The environment features modular medieval architecture, expansive terrain sculpting, and a ruined stone watchtower that serves as a focal point for environmental storytelling.
Design Challenge
The primary objective of this project was to establish a vast, large-scale open-world atmosphere while meticulously maintaining visual density and hardware performance. A significant technical hurdle involved seamless terrain integration, specifically ensuring that man-made structures like cottages and towers were naturally embedded into the steep, rocky inclines to avoid the “floating” geometry that often breaks immersion. Furthermore, the project required the development of a versatile atmospheric lighting system capable of transitioning between a naturalistic, gloomy overcast day and a high-contrast, inviting night-time aesthetic. Finally, balancing asset scale was critical; the environment needed to feel expansive and epic from a bird’s-eye view while remaining grounded, functional, and detail-rich when experienced from a third-person player’s perspective.
